I spend a lot of time waffling on Major Life Decisions. I try out different ideas on my tongue to hear how they sound as my mind snapcracklepops like a TV on the fritz, channels flipping madly.
But then, every once in awhile, something just clicks. And, with a certain strange stillness, I think: “Well, there you go. I guess that’s what I’m going to do.”
I think that happened today.

For realz? August? We’ll be state neighbors!
Only if you have a highly faulty sense of geography (which I do, incidentally).
A very good guess though! I wish we were going to be state neighbors! That way I could pop over for some fresh vegan spring rolls…
Hooray for decision clicking! Wooo. It’s nice when everything falls into place.
Ooooo what you gonna do?!
yes, what are you going to do??
you’re gonna be a pilot?
Wait, but the FB picture? You can’t live on both coasts at once. Unless…are you a witch?
new definition of bi-coastal!
You speak in riddles, woman! YOU SPEAK IN RIDDLES!!!!
You’re staying here??
Ah, I love that all I had to do was roll my cursor over the picture and then the name of the file showed up and BAM! I GOT YOU ALL FIGURED OUT MISS LAURIE! I think it’s a fantastic idea and I’m sure, a fabulous place to live.
Best of luck! It’ll be nice to have you a little bit closer.
You’re going to Boston? Whatcha gonna do there? (I was in Portland last weekend and I think you would LOVE LOVE LOVE living in Portland – it’s like San Francisco only smaller and better – in my opinion. I think I am definitely going to live in Portland some day – it’s so amazing!)
everyone –An explanatory post if forthcoming! Possibly! I was being cryptic because there were a few people (like my roommates) that I needed to tell in person before I told the Internet Public, but Naomi and Laura (and also Anna) cleverly saw through my cryptitude. An honorable mention goes to EMC for an excellent and well-reasoned guess.
West Coast Midwestern –Oh my god, so I have this weird thing that I am really embarrassed about. And the weird thing is that I Secretly Hate Portland. I cannot articulate my reasons and I in no way think it is justified because I know like 700 amazing people (you included) who love it. There’s just something about that city that majorly irks me. I’m very sorry, Portlandians! Someday I may move to your fine city and I will realize the error of my ways!
However, I do lovelovelove San Francisco which is closer to you anyway. And I bet that I would lovelovelove Humboldt County. Someday I will have money and I will fly there to confirm this.
Also, I’m so happy that YOU liked Portland! Because it really is a lovely place, I think! And they have an all-vegan grocery store! And an amazing donut shop! And a sweet nickel arcade!
Laurie, they also have blacklight miniature golf. !!!! Blacklight + Miniature Golf + Pirates (oh, did I mention it is pirate themed) = I am in love with Portland.
(Incidentally I did not even go to this mini golf place. We walked by it, and looked at it, but never got around to doing it. It is still obviously awesome.)
I won’t tell your secret to anybody – it looks like you already took care of that ! LOL. (This episode of Stating the Obvious has been brought to you by West Coast Midwestern.)
i was actually just in cambridge and i LOVED it!
ohhhhh . . . I’m so sad to loose you to another city! At least we still have you here for a lil’ while longer!
WCM –Blacklight mini-golf sounds truly amazing. But does anyone know what the deal is with Portland and pirates? Because the last time I was there, literally everything was pirate-themed.
Leigh –Isn’t it cute? And all those Hah-vahd boys!
Jennifer –I know! If you and A want to move to Boston, I’d be down with that. I’m thinking that I’ll be around until maybe Labor Day! We shall see…
I’ve always wanted to live in Beantown, but it’s never worked out. I almost had a grad school offer… then I did have a sort of postdoc offer… but it was not to be. I go there to see friends as often as I can justify, which usually works out to be about once or twice a year. Next visit I’ll have to look you up.
I don’t think you’ll ever see us moving there — Graham is very resistant to the idea; it’s “too popular” or some such, plus we’d never be able to afford to be homeowners. But I am always jealous when somebody else gets to live there.
I have a friend in Medford who’s looking for a roommate to share a house he owns. He is extremely strange and not particularly tidy, but he is a good cook.
Yay for those moments. I could sure do with one of them right about now.
L, I only saw the one pirate-themed thing in Portland while I was there, so maybe when you went there was some pirate thing going on … had Pirates of the Caribbean 1, 2 or 3 just come out or something…? I dunno…
