I just wanna say that I am so fucking proud of my girl Lauren. She just finished shooting a short film that she wrote and directed and it’s pretty much going to be awesome. She wrote an interesting blog post today about her experience and you can read it here.
Lauren’s first film was an award-winning short documentary about a little boy who is hearing, but lives with an entirely deaf family. You can (and should) watch it here. I was fortunate to be on the set with her one day in Austin and, even back then, it was obvious that she knew her shit. Lauren’s next big project was this sweet music video for Xiu Xiu, which is on a special limited edition dvd that comes with their latest album (which dropped last month). Of course, Lauren’s biggest claim to fame was her music video from last year’s highly-acclaimed smash hit “Blindfold” (written and performed by yours truly).
Anyway, I’m writing all of this because Lauren sent me this short script to read back in September and in just a few short months, she has pounded the pavement for funds and publicity (you can contribute your own dollars and cents here), assembled a kick ass cast & crew (the cinematographer of a Sundance-winning short that eventually became the Academy-Award-nominated Half Nelson), and completed filming on the project.
Dudes, that is AWESOME.
With women making up a pathetically small percentage of the film industry’s movers and shakers, Lauren’s proving that the glass ceiling is not shatter-proof.
