I feel like I might be kiiiiiiiiiiiind of having a nervous breakdown. I’m totally fine, I just can’t breathe. Or, like, move. Otherwise, I’m totally cool.
In other exciting news, Lauren was here this weekend and we saw two great movies. The first was The Hoax starring Richard Gere and Alfred Molina. We saw it at the cheap theatre and it’s totally great. Great writing, great acting, great, great, great. It’s sort of a “con artist caper” like Catch Me If You Can although the movie it really reminded me of is the also-fantastic Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
The other was actually a recording of a one-man show, performed before a live audience. The show was David Schmader’s Straight: A Conversion Comedy and I seriously thought it was amazing. I’m kind of a sucker for anything about the gays but this show is really smart and thoughtful and funny. It’s about his experience going undercover in a “conversion camp” in Texas– the kind designed to rid campers of their ungodly homosexuality. Conversion camps are an easy target and Schmader could have easily taken the low road here but he didn’t. Instead, he gives us a thoughtful, nuanced perspective on a complex issue.
