Mmmm, I love that artificial chocolate chip flavor! This healthy start to your day (which premiered in the 1970’s and it still sold today) is brought to you by the good folks at General Mills who also bring us such familiar favorites as Double Chocolate Cookie Crisps, Ice Cream Cones Cereal, Reeses Puffs, Lucky Charms, Count Chocula, and Frosted Cheerios.
What you may not realize, however, is that they also own Cascadian Farms (a ubiquitous brand of frozen organic vegetables), Muir Glen (they make a lot of popular organic tomato sauces), and good old 8th Continent (a brand of soy milk that’s mostly sold in big box grocery chains).
But don’t worry! All of the cereals above “are made with whole grains, delivering vitamins, minerals, fiber and other nutrients that studies suggest may help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, (and) obesity” according to the General Mills website. Whew! Thanks, General Mills!
It’s kind of bizarre that, based on sugar content alone, you’re actually better off with a bowl of Count Chocula than a soy protein bar.
Although, I’ve gotta tell you, those soy protein bars are fucking delicious.
